Rauriki Charolais - History

In 2004 Rauriki purchased their first females from Pouriwai Stud in Gisborne, where we were able to pick twelve 'R2 Heifers' that were in calf to Pouriwai S335 and newly imported French bull, Laurel.  Since this first purchase of heifers from Pouriwai, cows and heifers have been purchased from six other Charolais studs throughout the country, and particular regard of obtaining cattle that have a ''red factor" background or in calf to "red factor" bulls.  This was one of our original primary objects to set up a sole "red factor'' Charolais stud.

In resent times, our objects of having a sole ''red factor'' cattle herd has been changed to incorporate the more traditional "white'' or ''cream'' colour.  With particular regard to this in 2005, we purchased a further thirty two cows and twelve yearling bulls from Simca Hills Charolais Stud, in Northland.  Simca Hills as been breeding Charolais for over thirty years and have a good repretation for breeding good charolais cattle.  Especially in regard to structural soundness, growth rate and milking ability in females.  At this point all the Simca Hill cattle are measuring up very well and the yearling bulls will be up for sale in the autumn of 2006.

In 2004 we purchased Maungahina Sir James S24, a red factor bull to go over our white females.  He was brought because of his temperament, structural soundness, softness in the carcass and high growth rate.  He is now being used in his third season and these qualities are coming though in his progeny.

In 2006 we had 91 cows and heifers calving producing 84 calves that are registrated and have Performance Recording Fiqures with Charolais Breeders NZ, and still looking forward to further development with female numbers.
